Andrew Young with King at Chicago's airport in the 1960s
Deed
King tried to get home for holidays and family birthdays, but it was often impossible. “I’m away from home 25 to 27 days a month,” King lamented at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in 1965.
ThoughtMartin, said his wife Coretta, “had this terrific conflict about the duty to his family and the duty to his fellow man, and he really recognized that he had this obligation to both. But if you are going to serve humanity you’ve got to neglect your family to some extent.” (David Garrow, Bearing the Cross)
