General Douglas MacArthur admired Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence
Deed
August 1942. Having refused Britain’s offer for Indian independence in exchange for aiding the British in World War II, Gandhi launched the “Quit India” movement, demanding that the British withdraw from India or face civil disobedience. The British did not withdraw, and Gandhi was immediately imprisoned, along with all other Indian National Congress leaders.
ThoughtGeneral Douglas McArthur, fabled warrior of WWII and other armed conflicts, eulogized Gandhi this way: “In the evolution of civilization, if it is to survive, all men cannot fail eventually to adopt Gandhi’s belief that the process of mass application of force to resolve contentious issues is fundamentally not only wrong but contains within itself the germs of self-destruction.” The Life of Mahatma Gandhi (Louis Fischer)
