Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” . . . Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.

Season for Nonviolence 2012

January 30 – April 4

March 14

King assured the crowd outside his house
that the boycott would continue with or without him

Deed
The crowd around the bombed out house responded to King’s message of nonviolence with “Amen” and “We are with you Reverend.” The police commissioner, encouraged by the crowd’s response, began to speak but was booed and shouted down. King stepped forward, raising his hand for silence, and the mob became quiet. “Remember what I just said. Let us hear the commissioner.” The commissioner said police were doing their best to protect King and his family, and the mayor  promised a reward for information leading to the arrest of the bombers. King offered the last words.

Thought
Acknowledging the danger he was in, King reassured the crowd that the boycott did not depend on him. “I did not start this boycott. I was asked by you to serve as your spokesman. I want it to be known the length and breadth of this land that if I am stopped, this movement will not stop. For what we are doing is right. What we are doing is just. And God is with us. … If anything happens to me, there will be others to take my place.” (Parting the waters, Taylor Branch)

Devoted to continuing the work of Gandhi and King, Auroras Voice invites you to join us in observing the 2012 Season for Nonviolence. Every weekday from January 30 to April 4, we will endeavor to send a brief original message highlighting the words, thoughts, and deeds of Gandhi, King, or one of their peace and justice colleagues.
